U.S. documents for use in Portugal
Portuguese immigration guidance says foreign documents generally must be properly authenticated and, in most cases, translated into Portuguese. For an eligible U.S. public document used in Portugal, the Apostille Convention replaces the diplomatic or consular legalization chain.

Do not send a foreign-issued record through a U.S. authority. A document issued in another country follows that country's authentication route, even if the holder now lives in the United States or Portugal.
Living in Lisbon or Porto does not change which U.S. authority handles your document's apostille. Notary Pin coordinates eligible U.S.-issued documents for use in Portugal; we do not apostille documents issued by Portugal or other countries.
Before requesting a quote, identify the document's issuing authority, the Portuguese recipient and the purpose of the filing. An FBI Identity History Summary follows a different route from a state-issued birth or marriage certificate. Immigration and residence
AIMA processes may require criminal records or civil documents within a stated freshness window. Obtain the current checklist for the exact residence or immigration process before ordering and apostilling records.
Portuguese translation
AIMA says foreign documents are, in most cases, translated into Portuguese. The acceptable translator, certification, and sequencing can depend on the recipient and filing type; do not assume one translation format fits every case.
FBI background checks
An FBI Identity History Summary follows the U.S. Department of State route. A state apostille on a notarized copy does not authenticate the FBI official's signature.
Civil and education records
Portugal's published school-equivalency guidance requires official authentication or apostille and an official Portuguese translation. Higher-education and other filing types may differ, so confirm the receiving authority's current instructions.
